FAQs: Mosquito Control Products

On-skin mosquito repellents (pens and pump sprays) for bite protection, plus citronella-based outdoor options such as incense coils, reed diffusers and tealights to help deter mosquitoes around seating areas, patios and doorways. We also stock window fly screens to help reduce insects entering indoor spaces.

Standing water, and this is the step that does more than any product. Mosquitoes lay in still water and the larvae develop there, so anything holding water for a week or more can produce them: water butts, blocked gutters, plant pot saucers, buckets, watering cans, old tyres, tarpaulin folds, bird baths and ponds with no fish. It takes very little - a container the size of a teacup is enough. Walk the garden and empty, tip or cover everything holding water, screen the water butt with fine mesh, clear the gutters, and refresh bird baths weekly. Repellents protect you; removing the water reduces how many there are to protect yourself from.

For immediate protection, use an on-skin repellent as directed and reapply according to the label. For added comfort outdoors, use citronella deterrents near seating areas and place them upwind where possible. Personal repellent plus outdoor deterrents usually gives the best coverage, and clearing standing water reduces the numbers arriving in the first place.

Citronella products release a scented vapour that can help discourage mosquitoes in the surrounding area. They work best in still or sheltered outdoor spaces such as patios, doorways and seating areas, and should be positioned safely on stable surfaces, away from flammable materials, following the product instructions.

Use on-skin repellents on exposed skin as directed. Place citronella coils, candles and diffusers near the areas you sit or enter the home - patios, doorways and garden seating - without blocking walkways. If mosquitoes are getting indoors, fitting window screens reduces the entry points.

Suitability varies by product. Always read the label and use as directed. Keep children and pets away from burning coils and candles, and from treated areas until the label says it is safe to return. Store repellents out of reach. If using on-skin products, follow the age guidance and application instructions on the label.

Two different pictures. If you are bitten on covered skin or through clothing, the repellent is not the problem - reapply to every exposed area including ankles, wrists and behind the ears, which are the spots people miss, and reapply at the interval the label states rather than when you remember. If you are bitten heavily in one particular spot in the garden, there is likely a breeding site within a short distance; check for standing water nearby before buying anything else. Mosquitoes are also most active at dusk and dawn, so moving the timing of a meal outdoors does more than most products.
