Ultrasonic deterrents emit high-frequency sound and are often motion-activated, triggering when an animal approaches. They work best when aimed at the route foxes use most and placed with a clear line of sight. Effectiveness varies by placement and how determined the fox is, so repositioning and combining with other deterrents can improve results.

Scent-based repellents discourage foxes by making an area feel unsafe or “claimed” (some mimic territorial scents), which can reduce fouling and repeat visits. Apply to the hotspots foxes return to—around bins, lawn edges, borders and entry routes—and reapply as directed, especially after heavy rain.

Place deterrents exactly where foxes travel and foul: along fence lines, near gaps under gates, around bin areas, and on lawn/border edges. Cleaning fouled areas first and removing attractants (accessible food waste, open compost/bins) helps deterrents work better.

Some deterrents can reduce visits quickly, but behaviour change often takes several days. Consistent placement, reapplication as directed, and removing attractants makes the biggest difference—if foxes switch route, move the deterrent to the new hotspot.

Suitability depends on the product. Always read the label and use as directed, place products securely, and keep children and pets away during application and until any treated areas are dry/settled as instructed. For ultrasonic devices, consider other animals nearby and position them thoughtfully.
