Into corners, cracks, under carpet edges and along skirting boards - the places larvae feed and hide, rather than across open carpet. Apply a light, barely visible dusting rather than a thick pile. Check the label for which surfaces the product can be used on.

Less than most people apply. A thin film is the aim; a visible heap tends to get vacuumed straight up. Work it into gaps and along edges rather than tipping it out.

Powders keep working as long as they stay dry and undisturbed. Reapply after vacuuming or cleaning, or if the treated layer has been covered over or exposed to damp. Follow the label for reapplication timings.

Apply as directed on the label and put it where children and pets will not be in direct contact - into cracks, crevices and under furniture rather than across open floor. Avoid raising dust when applying, and read the label for any restrictions.

Powder alone rarely finishes the job, because the damage is done by larvae feeding on natural fibres out of sight. Vacuum carpets, rugs and upholstery thoroughly and often, paying attention to edges, under furniture and inside wardrobes, and empty the vacuum outside. Store wool, silk and leather items in sealed containers, and check second-hand fabrics before bringing them in. Use monitoring traps to track whether activity is actually falling.
