FAQs: Fly Control Kits

Kits pair the things that handle a fly problem from more than one angle - typically a trap or electric killer for the flies already inside, plus a spray or fly papers as backup. Check the individual kit page for exactly what is included.

A UV or LED tube draws flies towards the unit, where they contact an electrified grid that kills them on contact. They run continuously, which suits anywhere flies keep arriving, and work best in low ambient light - so indoors and at dusk rather than in bright daylight.

The traps and electric units in our kits are made for use in occupied homes and businesses. Site electric killers out of reach and away from food preparation surfaces. Where a kit includes a spray, follow the label: ventilate, keep pets and children out until treated surfaces are dry, and do not treat food or food-contact surfaces unless the label allows it.

Traps and electric killers start catching immediately, though it takes a day or two before the drop is obvious. Fast knockdown sprays act on the flies present at the time. Neither addresses where the flies are coming from, which is what decides whether the improvement holds.

That points at a breeding source rather than a failed kit. Check bins, drains, standing water, compost near the house and pet waste in the garden. If the flies are large and slow and there is a noticeable smell, look for a dead bird or rodent in a loft, cavity or under floorboards. Removing the source is the step the kit cannot do for you.

For a recurring problem, yes. A kit deals with flies once they are inside; fly screens stop them entering, which is the only measure that addresses the cause. Screens plus a trap is a more durable arrangement than either on its own.
