FAQs: Midge Repellents

On-skin repellents (spray pens and pump sprays) for bite protection, plus citronella-based outdoor options such as coils, tealights and reed diffusers to help deter biting insects around patios, doorways and seating areas.

Yes, more than with most biting insects. Midges are worst from late spring through to early autumn, and within a day they peak at dawn and dusk. They need still, humid, overcast air: a light breeze scatters them, so an exposed or breezy spot can be almost clear while a sheltered corner a few metres away is unbearable. Choosing where and when you sit outdoors does more than any product, and a fan on a patio works on the same principle.

For immediate protection, apply an on-skin repellent to exposed skin as directed and reapply according to the label. Cover up where you can, since midges go for the hairline, wrists and ankles. For added comfort outdoors, use citronella deterrents near seating areas and position them safely, and pick an open spot over a sheltered one where you have the choice.

Citronella products release a scented vapour that can help discourage biting insects in the surrounding area. They tend to work best in still or sheltered outdoor spaces, and should be used on stable surfaces and away from flammable materials, following the product instructions.

Use on-skin repellents on exposed skin as directed. Place citronella coils, tealights and diffusers close to where you sit or enter the home - patios, doorways and garden seating - without blocking walkways and following safe placement guidance.

Suitability varies by product, so always read the label and use as directed. Keep children and pets away from burning coils and tealights, and store repellents out of reach. If using on-skin repellents, follow the age guidance and application instructions on the label.

Usually coverage rather than the product. Midges will find any gap, so the bites cluster where repellent was missed - the hairline, behind the ears, wrists and ankles above the sock line. Reapply to those specifically and at the interval the label states. If you are still being swarmed, the conditions are against you: still, humid, overcast air at dawn or dusk is peak midge weather, and no repellent fully compensates. Moving to an open, breezy spot or waiting for the wind to pick up will do more.
